How to consult a doctor effectively

Doctors are very familiar with pinworm infections.
Here’s when to seek help and what to expect.

When to call the doctor

  • Persistent itching for more than a few nights
  • Visible worms in the anal area or underwear
  • Several children in the household show similar symptoms
  • Uncertainty about the diagnosis or how to collect a sample

What the doctor will do

  • Ask about symptoms and sleep disturbances
  • Examine the skin around the anus
  • Recommend a tape test (more below)
  • Provide prescription or over-the-counter antiparasitic medication

In many cases, the doctor will suggest that all household members be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection.

How sample collection and laboratory testing work

The tape test is the gold standard for diagnosing pinworms and can be comfortably done at home. The aim is to collect pinworm eggs from the skin around the anus.

How the test sample is collected

Sample in the morning

Perform the test in the morning, before the child uses the toilet or bathes.

Apply the tape

Press the sticky side of transparent tape to the skin around the anus.

Transfer to the slide

Place the tape on a microscope slide.

Repeat for three mornings

Repeat for three mornings in a row for highest accuracy.

Return the sample

Deliver or mail the slide(s) to your doctor or laboratory.

Detection accuracy

Why multiple samples matter

Female pinworms do not lay eggs every night. CDC and CDC-referenced life-cycle data indicate that eggs mature and become infectious within hours, but laying patterns vary.
Collecting samples over 3 mornings significantly increases detection accuracy.

Laboratory Testing

A lab technician examines the tape under a microscope to look for eggs. The presence of eggs confirms the infection. Rarely, adult worms may be seen directly.
